An editor who understands your work, knows your genre, and will be there for every book. Traditional publishing expertise for independently published fiction.
Self-publishing a book is one thing. Self-publishing a book that reads like it came from a major publisher is another.
As an indie author, you know that readers have high expectations and that a poorly edited book will show up in your reviews before it shows up anywhere else. You also know that finding a good editor, one who is reliable, understands your genre, turns work around professionally, and gives you feedback that genuinely improves your books, is not easy.
That is where I come in.
Whether you are releasing your first independently published novel or you are a prolific author with a back catalogue and a release schedule to maintain, I offer professional developmental editing and editorial assessment that will elevate the quality of your work to traditional publishing standards.
I am not a self-publishing consultant. I do not offer advice on formatting, distribution, cover design, or platform strategy. What I offer is expert editorial feedback on your manuscript, from someone who knows exactly what a high-quality novel looks like.
I offer two levels of editorial service for self-published fiction authors.
EDITORIAL ASSESSMENT
Reading of novel of approx. 90k words*
+
detailed report
+
1-hour video meeting
= approx. £1080*
Best for authors who have finished a draft and want a clear, high-level picture of how the novel is working as a whole. I read your full manuscript and write a detailed report covering structure, character, pacing, voice, and commercial potential. Includes a 1-hour video call to discuss the report.
DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING
Reading of novel of approx. 90k words*
+
inline amendments in text, comments in margin & summary report
+
1-hour video meeting
= approx. £1440*
Best for authors who have taken the manuscript as far as they can and want deeper, more targeted analysis. I read your full novel, make inline amendments, write detailed comments linked to specific passages, and provide a summary editorial letter covering the key structural and stylistic issues. Includes a 1-hour video call to discuss the editorial letter.
*Fees shown are averages for a 90,000-word novel. All fees include a 1-hour video call as standard. Your exact fee will depend on the length and complexity of your manuscript. Get in touch for a tailored quote.
Why Choose Me
There are a lot of editors out there. Here is what makes working with me different for indie authors.
Traditional publishing standards, applied to your work:
I am published by HarperCollins, Hodder & Stoughton, Headline, Bonnier Zaffre and SpellBound Books. I know exactly what a commercially published novel looks like and I bring that standard to every manuscript I edit.
I understand genre, and I work with yours:
My personal writing spans historical fiction, saga, romance, comedy, contemporary women’s fiction and literary fiction. I also edit crime, thriller, fantasy, romantasy, science fiction, domestic noir, and more. Whatever your genre, I know what readers expect from it.
I will tell you what works and what does not:
I have thirty years’ experience as a writer, teacher, and examiner. My feedback is honest, specific, and actionable. I will not tell you your book is wonderful when it needs more work, and I will not tell you it needs more work when it does not.
I ask to see a sample first:
Before we agree to work together, I will ask to see the opening five pages of your manuscript. This protects us both and ensures I am the right editor for your book.
I am a reliable long-term partner:
I understand that for a prolific self-publisher, consistency of editorial voice and a reliable turnaround are just as important as the quality of the feedback.
Genres:
I work with most fiction genres. My personal writing experience covers historical fiction, saga, romance, comedy, contemporary women’s fiction, and literary fiction. I also regularly edit manuscripts in:
- Crime and domestic noir
- Thriller and psychological thriller
- Fantasy and epic fantasy
- Romantasy
- Science fiction
- Cosy mystery
- Historical romance
- Contemporary women’s fiction
The only genre I do not take on is ultra-violence within any genre. If you are unsure whether your genre is a good fit, please get in touch and ask.
How It Works:
- Send me the opening five pages of your manuscript and a brief description of your novel (genre, length, and where you are in the process).
- I will come back to you with a quote and confirm availability.
- Once agreed, send me your full manuscript in Word format.
- I will complete the editorial work and send you your report or edited document.
- We will meet by video call to go through the feedback together.
- If you want to work together again on your next book, just get in touch.
