FAQs
What’s the Starter Package all about?
Investing in your writing can be daunting, so I offer an introductory package where I can read an extract of a novel/novella or a full short story or even a synopsis of your novel (all up to 5k words), write you a short report & then we can meet virtually to discuss your work. In this way, you can get some professional feedback on your writing for a smaller initial cost. If you feel you want more mentoring, then we can move on to other packages. However, you don’t have to begin with the Starter Package – you can decide how much help you need and create your own bespoke package from the services available from the beginning.
What’s the Agent/Publisher Submission Package all about?
Sending your work to agents or publishers is a time-consuming process and can be an anxious time, waiting for feedback. If you feel you want some guidance before submission or even once you’ve had some rejections and you’re not sure how to proceed, then this package could work well for you. I will read your whole submission i.e. usually the opening 10k words, your query letter & synopsis. I’ll then write you a 2k-word report with advice on what I feel is working well and what I feel could be changed, in order to grab an agent or publisher’s attention. This will be based on my professional experience and opinion. If you want an additional video call to discuss the report, let me know & I’ll offer a quote.
My novel is longer than 90k words. Can I still have the manuscript assessment package?
The short answer is yes; the longer answer is also yes, yet I’ll send you a quote if your novel is quite a bit longer than 90k words. Contact me to let me know and I’ll get back to you with a revised quote.
How does the bespoke package work?
Mentoring means something different to every writer. You might want to meet virtually for 1 hour once a month for 6 months & have me read extracts too. You might want a one-off 2-hour video meeting to discuss the structure of your novel. You might want me to read your 35k-word novella and write a 2k-word report. For the bespoke package, tell me what mixture of services you want, we’ll agree the length of extracts, meetings and reports in advance and I’ll quote you. The longer or more extensive package you need, I often offer decent discounts, so contact me for a quote.
What kind of things will we discuss in the video sessions?
We can discuss whatever it is about your writing that you feel you want help with e.g. planning a novel, researching for a novel, drafting & re-drafting, extracts of your writing, how to prepare a submission package for an agent or publisher, what to expect from the publishing process…and more! We can agree before the session what you want to cover.
What sort of things do you write about in your reports?
When I’m reading your work, I’ll be looking at whatever you’ve asked me to focus on. Beyond that, I’ll also be considering what agents and publishers might be looking for in the current publishing world and how well I think your work might fit with that. I’ll be offering you my opinion and my advice based on my experience. It’s up to you if you agree or not!
Do you work with writers who are writing any genre?
I’m happy to work with most genres – be aware that my personal experience of writing genres includes the following: historical, saga, romance, comedy, contemporary women’s fiction, literary. However, I’ve always read very widely and so I’m happy to look at work from other genres such as science fiction, fantasy, romantasy, thriller, crime, domestic noir etc. Ask me about genres if you want to discuss further.
Re extreme content, I’m fine with swearing in books – there’s plenty in my contemporary novels! However, I am not a fan of ultra-violence in any genre and thus I’m not the mentor for you if your work includes any sort of ultra-violence within any genre, particularly horror. Also, see Terms and Conditions for my terms on work that is considered excessively offensive.
Will you need to see any of my writing before we arrange to work together?
Yes. For enquiries about mentoring services, before we agree to work together, I will need to see 5 pages of your writing, usually the opening, (these should be A4 and sent in Word) as a sample. This is to ensure I am the right fit for your writing needs.
Will you be annotating my work and putting comments in the margins?
No. I won’t be editing your work. If you want a detailed edit, have a look at the editing page for top editor Tara Loder, who provides editing services. As your mentor, I read your work and then write a report with my opinion and advice after reading.
Do you have a list of Terms and Conditions for using the services on this site?
Yes. They give more details on each service. Please read the full list of Terms and Conditions. By proceeding with any purchase of any service on this site, you are declaring that you agree to them in full.
