As well as my writing mentor and book coach service, I offer 2 types of editorial work on your novel:
editorial assessment
&
developmental editing.
What is an editorial assessment?
I read your novel and I write a detailed report on how the novel works as a whole. The fee is lower as there are no comments in the margin.
What is developmental editing?
I read your novel, write detailed comments in the margin and write a brief editorial letter summarising the key issues. The fee is higher due to in-line editing, i.e. comments in the margin.
Not sure which service you need?
Editorial Assessment is for when you’ve finished your novel yet it’s likely to be your first or second draft and you want some outside input. You’re still open to rewrites and modifying the structure of the novel. Think of it as a diagnostic tool and a roadmap for the next revision. It’s a survey of where your novel is so far.
Developmental Editing is for later in the process, when you’ve taken the manuscript as far as you can on your own and want deeper analysis, as well as specified suggestions in the margin to pinpoint exactly where work needs to be focused. It’s a structural redesign of where your final draft needs to be.

FAQs
My novel is longer or shorter than 90k words. How much will the fee be?
I’ll send you a quote however long your novel is. Fees given above are the average cost for a 90k-word novel, yet the final fee will be given to you as a quote depending on the length of your manuscript and the amount of work I estimate the manuscript will require. Contact me to let me know what you want and I’ll get back to you with a quote.
Will you need to see any of my writing before we arrange to work together?
Yes. For enquiries about any editorial work, before we agree to work together, I will need to see 5 pages of your writing, usually the opening, (these should be A4 and sent in Word) as a sample. This is to ensure I am the right fit for your writing needs.
Do you edit manuscripts in any genre?
I’m happy to work with most genres – be aware that my personal experience of writing genres includes the following: historical, saga, romance, comedy, contemporary women’s fiction, literary. However, I’ve always read very widely and so I’m happy to look at work from other genres such as science fiction, fantasy, romantasy, thriller, crime, domestic noir etc. Ask me about genres if you want to discuss further.
Re extreme content, I’m fine with swearing in books – there’s plenty in my contemporary novels! However, I am not a fan of ultra-violence in any genre and thus I’m not the mentor for you if your work includes any sort of ultra-violence within any genre, particularly horror. Also, see Terms and Conditions for my terms on work that is considered excessively offensive.
